So yesterday a friend invited me to attend Saddleback church. For those of you that have no clue what Saddleback church is...... It's the church that birthed (or the pastor wrote) the book called Purpose Driven Life, which so many churches across the use if not world use as a teaching to grow Christians. I have yet to belong to a church that has used it or attended a church service that someone was preaching about one of the topics.
My dis-amazementSo knowing the reputation behind it and having attended Willow Creek (which is huge as well) my first glimpse of the main campus was suprisingly small. Sure i had been to saddleback a while back and had a service in one of the tents. But i was shockingly suprised at how small it was. It still fit about 3-4k people in the building i would gather. But this place was for the majority packed on a saturday 630pm service. Not to mention all of the other tents that had the fead going to them. I've never been a huge fan of really huge churches. I enjoy the community of the smallness of size. But breaking it up into those seperate campuses among 150 acres of land makes a church feel small. So kudos to Rick Warren and his following God's plan out for that.
The sermon was good and quite insightful. But I will not become a regular attender of the church. I could go into why, but it would really serve no purpose to God's kingdom for me to share why other than cause great confusion amongst readers. Those 5 of you out there. But if your interested i'll share.
The reason for the visitSo you may be asking yourself why on earth did i attend Saddleback church. Am i looking for a new church? (still undecided) Was there a guest singer (yes), was there a friend in need (possibly), was friendship strengthened (yes), was some fellowship and growth going on (OH YEAH).
So a friend from work invited me thats the main reason. But as i showed up to the service and met her friends people began to ask her why i had come to service. And her friend lead the question is he here to see Brian Littrell (who was guest singing that night). And before i could even get a word out, my friend said yes.
Now in my heart i'm like NO NO NO NO NO i'm not here to see a former Backstreet boy turned Christian to sing. But i said nothing. ANd the more i think about it, the more i think, ya she has invited me many times prior and i haven't gone, and now that she states that Brian Littrell is a special singer i'm all over it so that i can finally see someone famous.

And you know it was rather interesting for the following reasons
Screaming/Idolizing GirlsNow i would have thought for sure there would have been a couple of girls just totally screaming and crying stating that they had seen him. There were no Security guards at the front of the stage keeping fans away. (which oddly enough i have seen that occur at christian concerts as well) So ya maybe its becuase its orange county and people are used to seeing famous people and think nothing of it? Having grown up in indiana the only close we get to famous is meeting someone that the local news station had you on TV for something you did... whether that reason be good or bad.
Play GuitarDuring the two songs he sang he had a guitar. Two different ones for each song sang at different times. And thankfully for the video screens i would have thought the guy had no clue how to play guitar. But they way he played the songs was that he used his thumb and strummed maybe on every other strong beat. He would hold the E chord for what seems a really long time, when the backup accoustic guitar player was changing like every strong beat. So i began to ponder. Did marketing say he needed to have a guitar in front of him to play to break that boyband image of i have a great voice but have no actual musical talent. And Brian if your reading this, i mean no harm to you what so ever. Playing guitar is tough. The idea just made me laugh in my head. I wouldn't expect someone to pick up guitar quickly and continue on with a music career. I don't expect to come out with a CD where i am this awesome singer and play bass like Phil Joel from the News Boys. It's just not going to happen.
But the thing that just made it realistic for me, was at the end of the second song, the backup accoustic guitar player placed his guitar on a stand, and Brian gets up and carries his guitar with him into the back. He wasn't even plugged in. I understand the pressures of performing and needing to have a guitar to kind of play along but not really be heard to keep your through process going through the song. Also it can be used as a technique to break idea that its all about me singing here. There is something about having a guitar between the audience and the performer that breaks the idea that it isn't a performance. I've never been one for people to get up on stage and people have a great voice, but sing to a recording. there isn't anything wrong with it. In fact i was brought to my knees to one of those things. But Thats just me being judgemental and dealing with how Worship services should be conducted. Not sure i'll ever get an answer to that, but i'll still be searching.
Seeing Famous PeopleSo yesterday i got to see two famous people. One being Brian Littrell Former Backstreet boys singer turned Christian (as my friend termed it and i just had to laugh). As well as Rick Warren. Now Brian i didn't get to here from much other than his voice, and i got to see him strum a couple of E and C chords. But from Rick i got to learn a little bit about his past and how some things came to pass. Like he had a vision at the age of 25. Well thats awesome. I'm 25 going on 26 next week to be exact. It makes me kind of jealous (i'm over it though) that he got this vision at 25, and i'm still trying to make sense of the stuff in my head in what direction i'm headed. But at the age of 25 he started a church with 60 people and look at them now.
Then during one of there efforts to build bigger, he pulled out a story that God was telling him to share with the congregation how much he was going to give to the project. given the low salary he had (which is still more than mine) he said he was going to offer up 2 years salary in a three years time. Ya quite hard if you knew how much he was making. But a week later after he had announced it and did the first gift, Zondervan a publishing company called him that they wanted him to write a book called Purpose Driven life and they want to give him an advance of 50k more than what he had announced in the previous weeks sermon. It was a test of faith he had passed.
So i've heard a couple of people down the project of "the purpose driven life." And i'm sure people are entitled to their opinions. But when you begin to know the whole story of how faith was involved prior to writing the book and what it accomplished and what God is doing in the lives of people behind the book, or money, it becomes all hogwash.
Okay so this post is huge and i could go on and on and on. SO i won't.
So my bday is next sunday. i still can't believe it. Anybody have any ideas on fun things to do around here?
